ARE YOU IN THE 90%? • Unsure How To Pick A Squarespace Template

The #1 thing that gets confusing…

on Squarespace is which template to pick. When someone is interested in doing a Squarespace trial they will be directed to the templates page where there seems to be a million to choose from.
I was there too and it almost turned me off to Squarespace.
So before this happens to you let me jump right in here.

Seriously don’t even look at them. Whatever they have made there is actually not very helpful. Each template is not just the design you see there. It is a collection of different settings and options that are hard to distinguish from a site preview.

The magic of a drag-and-drop platform is that you can make that layout design with most of the templates anyways. You are not stuck with the lay out that is in there.

Some templates have almost all the tools that Squarespace offers and the rest have a varying degree of and mix of the blocks and tools.

Tools make up the functionality of your site in the form of blocks that you can add to make your site by adding content. The blocks and tools also might have a little different rules regulating how you can use them where they can go from template to template.

I recommend looking at the functionality of templates here: SQUARESPACE TEMPLATE COMPARISON CHARTS

The templates with most flexibility and functionality are
and YORK

Once you deviate from these you lose things like, secondary navigation, search boxes in your navigation or footers, special blog features, index pages and your mobile and e-commerce options can dip dramatically.

But one of these three is still a better choice than the others. I am going to let you in on a little secret.

Brine is the Iron Throne of Squarespace Templates.

I’m not the only one to favorite Brine. The solid choice for all professional and smart Squarespace website designers is BRINE.

Does that mean it is more difficult to use?
Heck no! I spend a lot of time in the back end of Squarespace. And the only thing that will be changing when you choose Brine is you will have more options. These may seem confusing at first but with Squarespace’s amazing help articles and instant chat support you can figure out what you need to know very quickly.

More is better. When you choose a very simple template it might be difficult or impossible to get your content to look the way you want it to.

Better yet if you are having your website built by a designer the more elaborate and detailed settings will be all set up for you from the start. So it’s going to be easy right from the beginning.

You can choose a template that is in the family of Brine.
They all have the same functionality and flexibility. Others in the family are named: (Aria, Basil, Blend, Burke, Cacao, Clay, Ethan, Fairfield, Feed, Foster, Greenwich, Hatch, Heights, Hunter, Hyde, Impact, Jaunt, Juke, Keene, Kin, Maple, Margot, Marta, Mentor, Mercer, Miller, Mojave, Moksha, Motto, Nueva, Pedro, Polaris, Pursuit, Rally, Rover, Royce, Sofia, Sonny, Sonora, Stella, Thorne, Vow, Wav, West)

Brine is the most functional and flexible of all the templates Squarespace offers.

Some Brine’s features include:

  • Stacked Index Pages

  • Advanced Products

  • Video Banners

  • Image Page Banners

  • Extra Navigation

  • Left, Center or Right Logo placement

  • Advanced Mobile Styles

  • Advanced Share Buttons

  • Ability to hide your Blog Post Date and Author Name

  • Search Bar in the Footer

  • Lightbox for your image to appear large in when clicked on and more..

Squarespace told Circle Member Designers:

“When in doubt, pick a template from the Brine family.
Brine is our newest and most customizable template family. Since Brine has our newest code base, you’ll also benefit from the most support from Squarespace. While we fix bugs in all templates, bugs in newer and more popular templates like Brine are usually prioritized over others.”

Did you choose another template?

It’s ok! Don’t stress. Squarespace is one of the only platforms that allows you to change your template and not have to start from scratch.
You can even preview the template before making the switch. There may be a few things that need tweaked, but it is so easy to change your mind here.

Read how to make the switch from Squarespace themselves: SWITCHING TEMPLATES
Squarespace has the best in class customer support and the most helpful articles I have ever encountered as a service provider.

But you like how another template looks…

I mentioned briefly before that you can use Squarespace’s blocks to arrange your content. You can also use the design section of the back end to tell your site how to look. Colors, fonts, spacing & more.

Using Brine but opening a different template into another trial account will allow you to mirror what you like best about that other template.

Using it for inspiration can be a great way to get started. A great website is your 24/7 marketer. It should be mapped to guide a visitor through the most important content and sell the heck out of you or your products. It’s going to work hard while you sleep and play.
