Testimonials serve our human nature. Most of us don’t want to be the guinea pigs and be the first to try something. Especially when it comes to spending money on products or services. We need to know that others like us have had great results and experiences.

Social proof is one of the most important parts of marketing and converting.

Having “Like Me” testimonials on your site increases these percentages. People want to know that it will work for someone in their situation, mental fortitude or with their body type etc. If your Ideal Client is a Mom with small children, focus on collecting and featuring those testimonials from other Moms with small kids. The people most like your ideal customer & client that you are selling to.

You might be thinking that you don’t want to speak to just one type of person (or gender) or that this is going to hurt your sales or exclude some paying customers from your services.

Very logical thinking, yet this doesn’t happen. The opposite happens.

HOW TO GET GREAT TESTIMONIALS

STEP 1:

If you need help getting testimonials, send an email off to your current or recent clients and customers asking them these questions. Treat it as not only a testimonial but for an opportunity to get some feedback to better yourself and your services. If you only have older ones to reconnect with that is ok for now, but in the future always do these while their experience is fresh in their minds.

Asking specific questions helps provoke feedback that works awesome as a testimonial and gives you more specific or elaborate reviews. We want to help them help you!

SERVICE BASED BUSINESS

Free Email Message Copy:
Start off with a personal message and tell them what you loved working together with them on.
Then use this copy or rewrite to make it your own:

It’s important to me that you got everything you wanted from our time together working on your _________. I’d love your input on our work together. If you could answer a few questions about your experience overall that would be amazing and really help me deliver the best possible service for future clients. If you could get this back to me in the next week that would be amazing.

If you’re ok with it I would like to use a quote or two for a testimonial on my website.

To create a great testimonial would you mind giving me permission to use your headshot and to direct quote sentences of your testimonial story and answers to these questions? I will only use the last initial of your name for privacy but would also like to add the state or country you live in. Would that be ok?

Thank you for your time and consideration. Clients like you is what makes my work a joy.

Testimonial Story: Please tell me what your life & situation was like before we worked together, during working together and after my services. Please describe your emotions and what was special for you.

Q1: What problem did my services help you solve?
Q2: Did you have any hesitations about working with me?
Q3: What did you like best about working with me?
Q4: How have you benefited from our time together?
Q5: Would you recommend me & my services? If so, why and to whom?
Q6: What’s the most important thing people should know about working with me?
Q7: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Q8: Is there any way I could improve upon my services or the experience you had?

Then add your personal thank you message.

PRODUCT BASED BUSINESS

If you could answer a few questions about your experience overall that would be amazing and really help us deliver the best possible products and services to you and our future customers.
If you could get this back to me in the next week that would be amazing.

If you’re ok with we would love feature your feedback as a review on our website. To create a great review would you mind giving me permission to use your first name, last initial and state? And to direct quote sentences of your testimonial story and review answers to these questions?

Thank you for your time and consideration. Customers like you are why we love to do what we do.

Q8: Is there any way we can improve upon the product or the experience you had?

Then add your personal thank you message.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR TESTIMONIALS AND REVIEWS

STEP 2:

If making any changes to their exact words ask for their permission. For example, when I take pieces out of a testimonial, they all might say “You” or “She”. I will replace some of those with my name and make them all she so the reader feels like that person is talking to the reader and not to the business owner.

Respect if they prefer to remain anonymous and if they don’t want their head shot photo included. Ask permission before using their name and I recommend using a last initial instead of a full name. Adding a general location where they live does increases the chances of connecting a reader to their testimonial. It also makes them even more credible.

STEP 3:

Take out the more unique, descriptive parts of each testimonial. Testimonials can start sounding repetitive so use specifics that makes it more real and unique. We want them to tell their own story with the product or service. Using some guided questions doesn’t really guide their answers it helps them communicate a better delivery of their experience. Pick out and encourage them to write about their emotions.

The most important elements to include in a testimonial:

• The difference you made for them
• If they said they would recommend you or come back to you
• And any emotions they described. Emotions are the key to connection for your viewers.

Hard time deciding what to keep? IT’S ALL SO GOOD SOMETIMES!
Remember you can put different parts of a testimonial on different pages of your website. And different things to do with the rest of it that might not go on your testimonials section of your website. Keep reading for those ideas…

For your testimonials or review page: Know what your ideal client needs to hear to convince him/her. What are her reservations? How is she going to decide which person to work with or which product to purchase? What exactly does he or she need to hear? What are they looking for on this page?

STEP 4:

Now that you have some great testimonials - get them out there!

This is going to not only give social proof but will increase your SEO. Testimonials and reviews will add import keywords and long-tail keyword phrases that people are likely searching for.

Your website will greatly benefit from having testimonials on most pages. Your home page should include your feature testimonial(s). Other awesome places are portfolios, shop pages and about pages. All will greatly benefit from this additional content and social proof. Increasing conversions and connections.

You can also use them next to CTAs (CALL TO ACTIONS).
Buttons or Links asking your viewer to BUY NOW, DOWNLOAD NOW, BOOK NOW etc.

There are even more great things to do with these that will help your marketing strategy.
The genuine, user authentic, connecting and growing trust type of marketing strategy.

You want to include Testimonials in as many areas as possible:

·   Share them on your social media posts – With your image or with the customer-submitted image and their words.

·   Put them in your Pinterest descriptions or on your graphics with your products/portfolio examples.

·   Create video customer testimonials to share on your website and YouTube for more search-ability. Be sure to name the title to problem or question that the testimonial experience has solved. They exact words or phrases that someone would search when looking for your service or product. It must be clear and directly related.

·   Case studies as part of your portfolio or sales page. Featuring the client or customer in a more inclusive story telling way.

·   I have a testimonial on the back of my business card

·   Include them in your emails

·   Inside your shipping packages

·   On any mailers like ads or postcards

·   On any ads where you have space and they will be legible

·   If you have an influencer marketing strategy and any of them try your product or service be sure to use those as a feature. People listen and respect the voice of those people they know like and trust. Someone who has a large following or tribe of their own even if they don’t know them.

DON’T FORGET TO SUPPORT YOUR CUSTOMERS REVIEWS ON OTHER SITES

If you have customers leaving reviews of your products on Google, Yelp or Amazon spend some time each day or week replying. Thanking them and inviting them back for more if it was good and giving any and all assistance possible if something has gone wrong. Own everything that happens with your product or service even if it was not your fault.

Serving our customers and clients doesn’t end at the delivery of our product or service. To really increase the trust of past and future customers we must continue to serve them after that exchange.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

Make and save your own template email or message. Then it’s ready to do at a moments notice for you to collect reviews and testimonials even when things are busy. Don’t let to much time pass before you reach out.

Becoming a person that your audience and leads know, like and trust is the gateway to them saying yes to being on your email list or yes to purchasing. Testimonials are one of the keys that unlocks that door.

Social proof is one of the most important parts of marketing and converting.

Turn those reviews and testimonials into magic. The magic that will grow your business wherever it’s sprinkled. Let your past customers do the talk and selling for you!
